An Act to amend the

Safe Streets Act, 1999 and

the Highway Traffic Act

to recognize the fund-raising activities

of legitimate charities

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1.Section 3 of the Safe Streets Act, 1999 is amended by adding the following subsection:

Permitted fund-raising by charities

(3)Subsection (2) does not apply to fund-raising activities that meet the following conditions:

1.They are conducted by a charitable organization recognized by Revenue Canada.

2.They are permitted by a by-law of the municipality.

2.Section 177 of the Highway Traffic Act, as re-enacted by the Statutes of Ontario, 1999, chapter 8, section 7, is amended by adding the following subsection:

1.They are conducted by a charitable organization recognized by Revenue Canada.

2.They are permitted by a by-law of the municipality.

Commencement

3.This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

4.The short title of this Act is the Safe Streets Amendment Act, 2000.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Safe Streets Act, 1999 to provide that the prohibition in subsection 3 (2) of the Act does not apply to fund-raising activities that are conducted by registered charities and are, in addition, permitted by municipal by-laws. A similar amendment is made to section 177 of the Highway Traffic Act.
