EXPLANATORY NOTE

Currently, subsection 6 (1) of the Members’ Integrity Act, 1994 provides that a member of the Assembly shall not accept a fee, gift or personal benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of the member’s duties of office.

The Bill repeals and re-enacts subsection 6 (1) to provide that a member of the Assembly shall not accept a fee, gift or personal benefit that might reasonably be seen to have been given in connection, directly or indirectly, with the performance of the member’s duties of office.

An Act to amend the Members’ Integrity Act, 1994 with respect to fees, gifts and personal benefits

His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1 Subsection 6 (1) of the Members’ Integrity Act, 1994 is repealed and the following substituted:

Gifts and other advantages

(1)  A member of the Assembly shall not accept a fee, gift or personal benefit that might reasonably be seen to have been given in connection, directly or indirectly, with the performance of the member’s duties of office.  

Commencement

2 This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3 The short title of this Act is the Strengthening Members’ Integrity Act, 2023.
