EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Algoma University Act, 2008 to re-instate the expanded power of the University to grant degrees which was included in the Act when it was enacted in 2008. The power was never proclaimed in force and was repealed under section 10.1 of the Legislation Act, 2006 as of December 31, 2018. The power would still come into force only on proclamation as in the version of the Act that was enacted in 2008.

An Act to amend the Algoma University Act, 2008

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1 (1)  Section 6 of the Algoma University Act, 2008 is repealed and the following substituted:

Degrees, etc.

6 The University may,

  (a)  grant bachelor degrees in any arts or science program; and

  (b)  award diplomas and certificates, except post-graduate diplomas and certificates, in any and all branches of learning.

(2)  Section 6 of the Act, as re-enacted by subsection (1), is repealed and the following substituted:

Degrees, etc.

6 The University may,

  (a)  grant degrees, including honorary degrees, in any and all branches of learning; and

  (b)  award certificates and diplomas in any and all branches of learning.

2 The Schedule to the Act is repealed.

Commencement

3 (1)  Subject to subsections (2) and (3), this Act comes into force on a day the day it receives Royal Assent.

(2)  Section 1 comes into force on a day to be named by proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor.

(3)  Section 2 comes into force on the day subsection 1 (1) comes into force.

Short title

4 The short title of this Act is the Algoma University Amendment Act, 2019.
