Bill 182 2007

An Act to name February in each year Black History Month

Preamble

The history of Canadians of African descent and their struggle against slavery, racism, exclusion and inequality is a significant part of Ontario's history.

It is appropriate and important to recognize and pay tribute to the contributions that African Canadians have made to the history of this Province.  They have contributed greatly to the shaping of Canada – they were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement in 1800s and were similarly involved in human rights struggles in the 1900s.

Black History Month gives us the opportunity to remember, educate and celebrate all of Ontario's rich history.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Black History Month

   1.  The month of February in each year is hereby named Black History Month in Ontario.

Commencement

   2.  This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

   3.  The short title of this Act is the Black History Month Act, 2007.
