An Act to amend the
Tenant Protection Act, 1997

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1. Subsection 114 (1) of the Tenant Protection Act, 1997 is amended by striking out "and section 124".

2. Part VI of the Act is amended by adding the following section:

Two-Year Rent Freeze

No rent increases during two-year period

116.1 Despite anything in this Act or in any other Act, no increase in rent is permitted in respect of the period from December 1, 2002 to November 30, 2004.

3. Section 124 of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

Lawful rent unaffected by vacancy or new tenant

124. The lawful rent for a rental unit is not affected by the rental unit becoming vacant or being occupied by a new tenant.

4. Subsection 125 (3) of the Act is repealed.

Commencement

5. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

6. The short title of this Act is the Rent Freeze and Rent Control Act, 2002.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Tenant Protection Act, 1997 to establish a two-year rent freeze and to eliminate vacancy decontrol.
