Bill 144 2001

An Act to proclaim
Democracy in Ontario Day

Preamble

Before 1792, the French and the British successively governed Ontario with no legislature composed of representatives elected by the people of Ontario.

The first elected legislature of Ontario, composed of representatives elected by the people of Ontario, met for the first time on September 17, 1792. Since that time, an elected legislature of that kind has met regularly to govern the province.

Our elected legislature is the symbol and substance of our system of democratic government in Ontario. It is appropriate to recognize the importance of that system.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of
Ontario, enacts as follows:

Democracy in Ontario Day

1. September 17 in each year is proclaimed as Democracy in Ontario Day.

Commencement

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Democracy in Ontario Day Act, 2001.
