An Act to Repeal the Safe Streets Act

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1.The Safe Streets Act, 1999 is repealed.

Commencement

2.This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3.The short title of this Act is the Nouveaux Misrables Act, 2000.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill repeals the Safe Streets Act, 1999. The Safe Streets Act is poorly conceived legislation that persecutes the poor - the Nouveaux misrables - while leaving charities vulnerable. The Safe Streets Act has endangered the future of charitable organizations by making it illegal to solicit money on streets, parking lots, transit stops or near ban machines, causing charities to lose precious fundraising opportunities or risk the safety and security of their volunteers.
