Bill 1432000

An Act respecting

Giovanni Caboto Day

On June 24, 1997, Canadians marked the 500th anniversary to the day of the arrival on these shores of the discoverer, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot). Giovanni Caboto was an Italian citizen of Venice with a keen interest in exploring new lands. Caboto landed on the eastern shores of Canada on June 24, 1497.

It is appropriate to recognize June 24 as Giovanni Caboto Day in Ontario to mark, not only the day of the explorer's arrival, but also the many ongoing contributions of the Italian-Canadian community to life in Ontario and Canada.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Giovanni Caboto Day

1. June 24 in each year is proclaimed Giovanni Caboto day.

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Giovanni Caboto Day Act, 2000.

The Bill proposes that June 24 be proclaimed Giovanni Caboto Day in honour of the Italian explorer who arrived on Canada's shores on June 24, 1497.
