An Act to amend the City of Toronto Act, 1997

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1. (1) Clause 3 (1) (b) of the City of Toronto Act, 1997 is repealed and the following substituted:

(b) 57 other members elected in accordance with subsection (1.1).

(2) Section 3 of the Act is amended by adding the following subsection:

(1.1) Two members of the council shall be elected for each ward, except that three members shall be elected for the ward of East York.

Transition, by-election

2. (1) The clerk shall hold a by-election to fill the vacancy created by the re-enactment of clause 3 (1) (b) and the enactment of subsection 3 (1.1) of the Act.

Nomination day

(2) The clerk shall fix the date of nomination day, to be a day not more than 60 days after this Act receives Royal Assent.

Application of Municipal Elections Act, 1996, s. 65

(3) Section 65 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 applies to the by-election with necessary modifications.

Term of new member

(4) Despite subsections 6 (1) and (2) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, the term of office of the member elected in the by-election ends on November 30, 2000.

Commencement

3. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

4. The short title of this Act is the City of Toronto Amendment Act, 1998.
