Ontario’s Mace

The Mace symbolizes the authority of the Speaker to oversee the Legislature. It represents Ontario’s parliamentary democracy and the independence of our law-making bodies and must be present at each parliamentary session. The current Mace of Ontario was made in Ottawa in 1867 out of gilded copper and decorated with a gold finish. It was refurbished in 2009 with the installation of two diamonds from northern Ontario.
