EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Legislative Assembly Act to require persons elected members of the Assembly to take an oath or affirmation of office.

An Act to amend the Legislative Assembly Act
His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1 The Legislative Assembly Act is amended by adding the following section:
Oath or affirmation of office
24.1 (1) Every person who is elected a member of the Assembly shall, before sitting and voting in the Assembly for the first time after that election, take and subscribe before the Clerk of the Assembly the following oath or affirmation of office, in English or French:
“I, (insert full name of member), swear (affirm) that I will, to the best of my ability, execute the powers and duties conferred on me as Member of Provincial Parliament for (insert name of riding) in the Province of Ontario.
I have not accepted, and will not accept, any payment, reward or promise of any payment or reward, for the exercise of this office in a biased, corrupt or improper manner.
I will act with fairness and integrity at all times.
During the performance of my duties, I will be impartial and honest, being careful to not make statements that I know to be false.
I will represent the views of my constituents, according to my judgment and to the best of my ability.
I will act in the public interest and will not exploit my powers or privileges for personal gain.
I will respect and uphold the rules of the Legislature and the laws of Ontario and Canada.
So help me God. (Omit this line in an affirmation.)”
Entitlement to sit
(2) A member is not entitled to take their seat unless the member complies with subsection (1).
Application
(3) Subsection (1) applies to a member who is elected on or after the polling day of the next general election that is held after the day this section comes into force.
Commencement
2 This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3 The short title of this Act is the Protecting Ontario by Upholding Honesty and Integrity Act, 2026.
