EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Education Act. The amendments require the Minister of Education to ensure that a course of study in civic education is taught in grade 9, 10, 11 or 12.

An Act to amend the Education Act with respect to civic education
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1 The Education Act is amended by adding the following section:
Civic education
8.0.1 (1) The Minister shall use their powers under paragraph 2 of subsection 8 (1) to ensure that a course of study in civic education is taught in grade 9, 10, 11 or 12.
(2) The course of study in civic education must include instruction on the following topics:
1. An overview of Canada’s constitution, including the separation of powers and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
2. Methods for identifying misinformation and disinformation.
Commencement
2 This Act comes into force on July 1, 2022.
Short title
3 The short title of this Act is the Education Amendment Act (Civic Education), 2022.
