An Act to amend the Education Act
to provide for the appropriate use
of communications technology in schools
by requiring boards to establish policies
and guidelines governing the use of
wireless communications devices
by pupils on school premises

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1. Section 302 of the Education Act, as enacted by the Statutes of Ontario, 2000, chapter 12, section 3, is amended by adding the following subsection:

Same, wireless communications devices

(6.1) A board shall establish policies and guidelines governing the use of cellular telephones, pagers and other wireless communications devices by pupils on school premises and providing for disciplinary consequences for non-compliance.

Commencement

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Education Amendment Act (Appropriate Use of Technology in Schools), 2001.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Education Act to require boards of education to establish policies and guidelines governing the use of cellphones, pagers and similar devices by pupils on school premises and providing for disciplinary consequences for non-compliance.
