Archives Awareness Week
Preamble
Ontario has a rich and colourful recorded history. Archives play an essential role in the preservation and use of that history. By acquiring, preserving and making available documentary materials from all aspects of society, archives promote the heritage of Ontario and safeguard the collective memory and rights of its citizens.
Archives ensure a community legacy by preserving evidence of past thoughts, deeds and actions. Archives provide accountability through assurances of access to records of governments of all levels. Archives foster a deeper collective understanding of local history through the availability of and research into local archival records. Archives can also be used as an educational resource for students of all levels.
The Archives Association of Ontario represents a wide array of institutions, individuals and users of archives including those located in schools, churches, governments, cultural organizations, hospitals, First Nations and private corporations.
Given the important role that archives play on behalf of the citizens of Ontario, present and future, it is fitting that the week beginning on the first Monday in April in each year is proclaimed as Archives Awareness Week.
Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Archives Awareness Week
1. The week beginning on the first Monday in April in each year is proclaimed as Archives Awareness Week.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the Archives Awareness Week Act, 2001.

The Bill proclaims the week beginning on the first Monday in April in each year as Archives Awareness Week.
