Born in Surrey, England, Charles Manly showed his art at several annual exhibits of the Ontario Society of Artists during the 1890s. Dartmoor, celebrated in the poems and novels of Thomas Hardy, is a mainly treeless plateau of granite situated in the southwest English county of Devon.
