Grade 11/12 Legislative Process Program
Program Overview
Students visiting the Legislature will participate in a series of engaging activities that highlight the legislative process and provide an introduction to the lawmaking process in Ontario. This 90-minute program consists of three segments:
- A visit to the Legislative Chamber: either watching MPPs debate when the House is sitting, or an interactive session when the House is not sitting
- A tour of the Legislative Building focusing on its history and function of Parliament
- A participatory group discussion which illustrates the legislative process (see below)
Topics covered:
- Difference between Government and Parliament
- The structure of the Legislative Assembly and a typical day in the House
- The roles and responsibilities of the parliamentary players in Ontario’s Legislature, as well as the legislative process
- The roles and responsibilities of MPPs in Ontario, with reference to the concepts of political parties and the electoral process
Issues we will ask students to consider:
- What is citizenship?
- What is a democracy?
- Where do you access information about current events? How do you know you’re getting accurate, unbiased information?
- How can you learn what parliament is working on right now?
Interactive Session:
Students will participate in a group discussion about how a bill becomes law, how to become informed and how you can participate in the legislative process. This activity aims to highlight the importance of active and informed citizenship and civic engagement.
