Purchased in 1913 from the 41st OSA Exhibition in Toronto, the artist painted this work while sketching with Tom Thompson in early spring in York Mills. This popular sketching site was a small mill town located just north of Toronto at Bayview Ave and the west branch of the Don River.
Lismer later became a member of The Group of Seven.
