Ontario Speaker Donna Skelly Visiting Students in Sudbury

Visit to Marymount Academy part of provincial outreach initiative to engage youth in civic life

TORONTO, September 29, 2025 - The Honourable Donna Skelly, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s first female Speaker, will visit Marymount Academy in Sudbury on Wednesday, October 1st. Speaker Skelly, who grew up in Capreol and attended the then Marymount College in Sudbury, is visiting her alma mater as part of her initiative to bring parliament to northern and rural Ontario.

Speaker Skelly will meet Marymount Academy students to promote a deeper understanding of Ontario's legislative process and the vital role the Legislature plays in shaping the province's future for all its citizens.

As part of this visit, students will take part in an interactive civic education session focusing on how government and parliament function and the process of making laws. The program is designed to be both fun and educational. One of the highlights will be a mock debate, where Speaker Skelly will preside, allowing students to experience firsthand what it's like to participate in parliamentary proceedings.

"It is incredibly meaningful that my first visit through this outreach program is to the school I once attended," said Speaker Skelly. "By bringing the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to those who are unable to visit in person, we are helping young people in Sudbury better understand how parliament and government can impact their daily lives and showing them how their voices can make a difference.”

Speaker Skelly will also be meeting with students from C.R. Judd Public School in Capreol during her visit on Wednesday.
