What is a recorded division?

The House makes decisions by voting on motions, which are formal proposals moved by MPPs that are often debated. As part of the process of voting on motions, the Speaker first puts the proposal to the House for a voice vote. If five or more MPPs stand in their places to request it, the vote proceeds to a “recorded division.” This is a formal voting process in which the names of all MPPs who vote in favour of or in opposition to a motion are individually announced and recorded.
