I beg to inform the House that during the adjournment, a vacancy has occurred in the membership of the House by reason of the resignation of Floyd Laughren, Esquire, as a member for the Electoral District of Nickel Belt, effective February 28, 1998. Accordingly, I have issued my warrant to the Chief Election Officer for the issue of a writ for a by-election.

That the Minister of Finance be authorized to pay the salaries of the civil servants and other necessary payments pending the voting of supply for the period commencing May 1, 1998 and ending October 31, 1998, such payments to be charged to the proper appropriation following the voting of supply.

A debate arose and after some time, the motion was declared carried.
