EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill proclaims the first full week of December in each year as Romanian Heritage Week.
Bill 122 2026
An Act to proclaim Romanian Heritage Week
Preamble
Ontario is privileged to be home to a diverse and engaged community of approximately 150,000 Romanian Canadians. Stemming from the first wave of immigration in the late 19th century and another wave in the aftermath of World War II, Romanian Canadians have enriched the province through successes in entrepreneurship, education, athletics, the arts, science and public service.
Romanian Canadian organizations, such as Graiul Românesc (The Romanian Voice), established in Windsor in 1929, and the Romanian Cultural Association, founded in Hamilton in 1957, have protected and preserved Romanian culture in Ontario by connecting people to their linguistic, artistic and religious heritage.
By proclaiming the first full week of December as Romanian Heritage Week, the Province of Ontario continues to recognize the important contributions that Ontarians of Romanian heritage have made in building Ontario and honours the notable economic, political, social and cultural achievements of this community throughout the province.
Moreover, Romanian Heritage Week stands as a valuable opportunity to not only honour the past but give younger generations the opportunity to connect with their heritage and continue to positively contribute to our society as a whole.
Therefore, His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Romanian Heritage Week
1 The first full week of December in each year is proclaimed as Romanian Heritage Week.
Commencement
2 This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3 The short title of this Act is the Romanian Heritage Week Act, 2026.
