EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill enacts the Honouring our Veterans Act, 2017. The Act provides that an individual may request to be identified as a veteran on his or her driver's licence or photo card.

An Act respecting identification for veterans

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Definitions

1 (1)  In this Act,

"driver's licence" has the same meaning as in the Highway Traffic Act; ("permis de conduire")

"photo card" has the same meaning as in the Photo Card Act, 2008; ("carte-photo")

"veteran" means an individual who is serving or has served honourably in the Canadian Armed Forces, including the Reserve Force. ("ancien combattant")

Request to be identified as veteran

(2)  An individual may, at the time of issuance or renewal of a driver's licence or photo card, request that the driver's licence or photo card identify the individual as a veteran.

(3)  If an individual makes the request under subsection (2) and the individual is certified to be a veteran by the Royal Canadian Legion - Ontario Command, the individual's driver's licence or photo card, as the case may be, shall be issued bearing the text "VETERAN/ANCIEN COMBATTANT" on a yellow background immediately below the individual's photograph.

Regulations

(4)  The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations providing for matters which, in the opinion of the Lieutenant Governor in Council, are necessary or desirable to facilitate the implementation of this Act.

Commencement

2 This Act comes into force six months after the day it receives Royal Assent.

3 The short title of this Act is the Honouring our Veterans Act, 2017.
