An Act to amend the Legislative Assembly Act

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

   1.  Subsection 61 (1.2) of the Legislative Assembly Act is repealed and the following substituted:

Same, from April 1, 2014

   (1.2)  Despite subsections (1) and (1.1), but subject to subsection (1.3), the annual salary of every member of the Assembly for a fiscal year that begins on or after April 1, 2014 is an amount equal to the salary in effect on March 26, 2009.

Subsection (1.2) ceases to have effect

   (1.3)  Subsection (1.2) ceases to have effect as of April 1 of the second fiscal year immediately following a fiscal year for which the Consolidated Statement of Operations of the Province, as set out in the Public Accounts laid before the Assembly, shows that the Province's total revenues exceed or is equal to its total expenses.

Commencement

   2.  This Act comes into force on April 1, 2014 or, if this Act receives Royal Assent after that date, it is deemed to have come into force on that date.

Short title

   3.  The short title of this Act is the MPP Salary Freeze Act, 2014.

 

EXPLANATORY NOTE

Currently, under the Legislative Assembly Act, the annual salary of MPPs for the 2013-2014 fiscal year is frozen at the salary level that was in effect on March 26, 2009.  An amendment continues this salary freeze until the beginning of the second fiscal year immediately following a fiscal year after March 31, 2014 for which the Consolidated Statement of Operations of the Province, as set out in the Public Accounts laid before the Assembly, shows that the Province's total revenues exceed or is equal to its total expenses.
