An Act to end public funding of electroconvulsive therapy

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

   1.  Section 11.2 of the Health Insurance Act is amended by adding the following subsection:

Exception

   (2.1)  Despite subsection (1), electroconvulsive therapy is not an insured service.

Commencement

   2.  This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

   3.  The short title of this Act is the Ending Public Funding of Electroconvulsive Therapy Act, 2010.

 

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Health Insurance Act currently provides that insured services are prescribed by regulations.  The Bill amends section 11.2 of the Act to provide that electroconvulsive therapy is not an insured service, despite the regulations.
