Bill 47 2010

An Act to proclaim Victims of Crime Awareness Week

Preamble

Recognizing victims of crime each year reminds us that all victims deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.  We keep in mind the impact crime can have on victims, on families and on friends.  We pay tribute to those who have been victims of crime and those we have lost as a result of crime.  We acknowledge the work of those people in our province whose commitment helps support victims of crime.  We raise awareness of victims' rights to ensure that victims of crime are treated with dignity and respect.

Since 2006, the federal Department of Justice, and various partners, have organized a National Victims of Crime Awareness Week during the third week of April.  It is desirable that the Province of Ontario also recognize that week by proclaiming it the Victims of Crime Awareness Week.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Victims of Crime Awareness Week

   1.  The third week of April in each year is proclaimed to be a week of commemoration for victims of crime and shall be known as the Victims of Crime Awareness Week.

Commencement

   2.  This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

   3.  The short title of this Act is the Victims of Crime Awareness Week Act, 2010.
