An Act to amend the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 to prohibit door-to-door retail of electricity

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

   1.  The Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 is amended by adding the following section:

Prohibition, door-to-door electricity retail

   88.13  (1)  No person shall retail electricity by means of door-to-door solicitation.

Contract has no effect

   (2)  A contract for the provision of electricity that is entered into by a consumer and a retailer of electricity and that is entered into on or after the day this section comes into force has no effect if the contract is entered into as a result of door-to-door solicitation by the retailer.

Commencement

   2.  This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

   3.  The short title of this Act is the Ontario Energy Board Amendment Act (Door-to-door Electricity Retail), 2009.

 

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 to prohibit the retail of electricity by means of door-to-door solicitation.  A contract for the provision of electricity has no effect if it is entered into as a result of door-to-door solicitation by the retailer.
