An Act to proclaim
Motorcycle Awareness Week

Preamble

The motorcycle is an important part of recreation and transportation in Canada. It has contributed to government activities nationally, as well as locally, both in war time and peace time.

Motorcycle ownership in Ontario has increased to record levels. There are more than 95,000 officially licensed motorcycles for road use and an untold number of motorcycles for off-road use.

In the interest of safety, it is necessary to develop skills and awareness of proper habits to handle motorcycles on Ontario highways. It is also important for the citizens of Ontario to be aware of motorcycles on highways and the vulnerability of motorcyclists and to recognize the importance of sharing the roadway.

Several communities in Ontario have proclaimed motorcycle safety and awareness weeks. The Province of Ontario wishes to promote education and safe riding habits for motorcycles. It is appropriate to proclaim a week for that purpose in the month of May when there is an annual renewal of motorcycle enthusiasm.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Motorcycle Awareness Week

1. The week beginning on the first Monday in May of each year is proclaimed as Motorcycle Awareness Week.

Commencement

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Motorcycle Awareness Week Act, 2002.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill proclaims the week beginning on the first Monday in May of each year as Motorcycle Awareness Week.
