An Act to amend
the Education Act
to provide for a
Special Education Advocate
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1. The Education Act is amended by adding the following section:
Special Education Advocate
57.3 (1) The Minister shall appoint a Special Education Advocate.
Role
(2) The Special Education Advocate shall,
(a) investigate and report to the Minister on matters relating to special education programs and special education services;
(b) make recommendations to the Minister relating to special education programs and special education services, including recommendations for changes in provincial funding relating to those programs and services; and
(c) advise and assist the parents and guardians of pupils in special education matters under this Act.
Reports and recommendations public
(3) The reports and recommendations of the Special Education Advocate shall be made available to the public.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is Carleigh and Emily's Law (Education Amendment Act - Special Education Advocate), 2001.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Education Act to provide for a Special Education Advocate who would investigate and report to the Minister on special education matters, make recommendations to the Minister on those matters, including recommendations for changes in provincial funding, and advise and assist the parents and guardians of pupils in special education matters.
