An Act to amend
the Compensation for Victims
of Crime Act to remove maximums
for compensation awards to victims
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1.Section 19 of the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act is amended by adding the following subsection:
Exception
(6)Subsections (1) , (2) and (3) do not apply to an amount awarded to the victim or to a person responsible for the support of the victim, where an injury incurred under clause 5 (a), (b) or (c) results in long-term or permanent disability, and, in the Board's opinion, periodic payments are necessary for the support and maintenance of the victim.
Commencement
2.This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3.The short title of this Act is the Compensation for Victims of Crime Amendment Act, 2000.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends section 19 of the Compensation for Victims of Crime Act which sets out the maximum awards the Board is permitted to make under the Act. Section 1 of the Bill authorizes the Board to make an award to a victim or to a person responsible for the support of the victim in excess of the maximum awards, where the victim's injuries result in long-term or permanent disability.
