STANDING COMMITTEE ON
JUSTICE POLICY
COMITÉ PERMANENT
DE LA JUSTICE
Thursday 28 May 2026 Jeudi 28 mai 2026
The committee met at 1300 in committee room 2.
Committee business
The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Good afternoon, committee members. The Standing Committee on Justice Policy will now come to order.
We’re meeting today for committee business. Are there any motions? MPP Ciriello.
MPP Monica Ciriello: I move that the committee enter closed session for the purpose of organizing committee meetings, please.
The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Thank you. MPP Ciriello has moved a motion.
I have MPP Fife, please, on the motion.
Ms. Catherine Fife: There’s no reason whatsoever for this committee to go in camera just to organize and plan on the estimates that we approved earlier this week. I think people would be very interested to know how we are setting our agenda as a justice committee, given this government’s record on justice and failure to address tough-on-crime initiatives.
I would also say that I would want the public to know that we are going to be discussing the allocation particularly around the FOI development that this province has moved in, which is preventing us as legislators and the media and the public from really finding out what’s going on in Ontario.
There’s no reason for us to go behind closed doors. This is organizing business of the government, and we as legislators have the right to discuss that in an open session.
The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Thank you.
Any further discussion on the motion? I will now put the question. Shall the motion carry? All those in favour, raise your hand. All those opposed, raise your hand. The motion is carried.
We’ll now go in camera, please. Thank you. It’s a two-minute recess.
The committee recessed at 1303 and later continued in closed session.
