Grade 11 and 12 Law Program
Program Overview
Students who particpate in the grade 11/12 Law Program will particpate in a series of engaging activities that relate to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the legislative process. This 90-minute program consists of three segments:
- A tour of the Legislative Building: highlighting the development of human rights in Canada
- An interactive session that focuses on competing Charter Rights in the everyday world
Topics covered:
- The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- The Ontario Human Rights Code
- The development of human rights in Canada
Issues we will ask students to consider:
- What is the Canadian Constitution?
- What is the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
- What is the Ontario Human Rights Code?
- How do Canadian Charter rights compete?
- How does Ontario legislation affect our everyday lives?
Interactive Session
Students will review contemporary human rights claims that have been filed at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. This activity aims to engage students in a discussion of how the rights of Canadian citizens can compete with one another in the everyday world. This program is designed to enhance concepts taught in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to familiarize their students with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as the Ontario Human Rights Code prior to their visit.
