Niro, Shelley (1999) - At the Edge [Oil on canvas] ©Government of Ontario Art Collection, Archives of Ontario
Shelley Niro was born in Niagara Falls, New York in 1954 and grew up on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She is a multidisciplinary artist - a painter, photographer and filmmaker plus. Her work is often humorous, and she likes to challenge Indigenous stereotypes and misconceptions. Her style can reflect a hybrid between western and Indigenous cultures. She is inspired by Mohawk storytelling as well as western pictorial traditions.
Her work has been shown in museums across North America, and she is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists. Another of her works, Tutela, is displayed in the Legislative Building lobby.
