Third Floor East Wing
The artworks displayed in the East Wing on the third floor of the Legislative Building represent several eras of the collection, including genre and historical paintings alongside contemporary works.
Many paintings in this hallway were originally purchased for the Upper Canada Normal School, a training school for elementary teachers. Some are copies of famous European pieces, created by skilled copyists for educational study.
Other works were created by Ontario artists George Agnew Reid and C.W. Jefferys. Reid was a prolific artist who donated 459 pieces to the Ontario government. His pieces often depict rural life and landscapes. Jefferys was a landscape painter and muralist, and is best known for his historical illustrations, which were primarily created for school history textbooks beginning in the 1920s.
