Lucius O'Brien was born in Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1832. A member of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), he was also a founding member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) when it was created in 1880. He was appointed its inaugural President, holding the position until 1890.
