The IODE (Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire) is a women’s charitable organization which focuses on the welfare of children, education and community service in over 400 branches across the country. The John G. Howard chapter in Toronto generously donated this painting in 1921.

The image depicts a floating figure of Christ placing either a halo or a crown of thorns on the head of a fallen soldier who is a Canadian signalman in World War One. The Maple leaf badges on the collar identifies him as a Canadian. The crossed flags on the uniform and the white and blue striped flag on the ground, identifies the soldier as a signalman.
