This painting was purchased from the 4th Annual OSA Exhibition in Toronto in 1876. In 1837, artist Daniel Fowler took a sketching tour of the Rhineland and the Moselle Valley – what is now known as West Germany. This specific water mill was one of the artist’s favourite subjects and appeared in several of his works.
