William Daniel Blatchly became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1885. He had immigrated to Canada from England in the early 1880s, working as a lithographer in Toronto. Lithography was a process of creating images on metal plates to be used for printing. 

Blatchly was elected the first president of the Toronto Art Students' League and held the post until 1890. He passed away in Toronto in 1903.
