Women’s History Month

October 2, 2026

October is Women’s History Month in Canada. This month celebrates and honours contributions women have made, and continue to make, in our country.

Watch the documentary “Women Should Vote: A short history of how women won the franchise in Ontario” to learn about women’s suffrage in Ontario at the turn of the 20th century.

You can also watch the "Astonishing Lives of Older Women" (opens YouTube) and the "Black Women in Political Leadership" (opens YouTube) Speaker Series videos to learn more about women’s experiences and leadership. The video "Parliamentary Fashion - Speaker’s Robes" (opens YouTube) discusses the modifications made to the Speaker’s traditional attire, which was originally designed for men.

Explore the A Remarkable Assembly picture gallery to learn about the women who have played important roles in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario (LAO) and watch the video "A Remarkable Assembly - The Interviews" (opens YouTube) featuring interviews from some of the women MPPs included in the exhibit. For more on the history of women in the LAO, listen to the ON Parliament podcast episode "In Honour of Women’s History Month."

On October 28, 124 young women and gender-diverse individuals from across the province will gather at the Legislature for the Ontario Women’s Parliamentary Forum. This program is designed to inspire the next generation of leaders through firsthand insight into Ontario’s parliamentary process, connections with women in leadership, and learning opportunities focused on civic engagement and public service.
