Film Vaults
For a period of twenty years, from 1928 to 1948, the Board of Censors of Motion Pictures for Ontario had offices in the Legislative Building where they would watch and edit movies according to their standards for viewing audiences in the province. As the type of film being used during this era was nitrate-based and highly flammable, a concrete bunker was built to store it safely in the event of a fire. Concrete walls were designed to be five feet thick in places, and heavy metal doors were added to each of the individual bunker vaults. An exterior cabin was constructed to allow for the transfer of film directly from the storage area for shipping to other locations in the province. Today, the storage vaults are used to store carpentry supplies.
