New Sergeant-at-Arms of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario appointed

Toronto, June 5, 2023—The Legislative Assembly of Ontario has appointed Tim McGough as the new Sergeant-at-Arms of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, effective June 19, 2023.

Mr. McGough was appointed by Order of the Legislative Assembly after being unanimously selected and recommended by a panel of MPPs from each recognized party, comprised of Trevor Jones (Chatham-Kent-Leamington) and Jennie Stevens (St. Catharines) and chaired by Assembly Speaker Ted Arnott.

The Sergeant-at-Arms is responsible for coordinating security through the direction of the Legislative Protective Service and overseeing building management through the Precinct Properties Branch. The role also includes ceremonial services on behalf of the Ontario Legislative Assembly.

With close to 40 years of experience in the policing field, Mr. McGough began his career with the Royal Military Police. He served in various roles with the Medicine Hat Police Service in Alberta including Inspector, Professional Standards Investigator, and Acting Chief of Police. Mr. McGough comes to the role following the retirement of Jackie Gordon, Ontario’s first female Sergeant-at-Arms, late last year. Ms. Gordon held the position for over five years and oversaw numerous security improvements at the Legislative Building, including the introduction of a new Visitors’ Entrance.

“On behalf of the Members of Provincial Parliament, we look forward to working with Mr. McGough and congratulate him on his appointment as Sergeant-at-Arms,” said Speaker Arnott.
