Committee business

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Good morning, everyone. The Standing Committee on Justice Policy will now come to order.

On today’s agenda is committee business. Is there a motion? MPP Ciriello, you have a motion?

MPP Monica Ciriello: Yes. I move that the committee enter into a closed session for the purpose of organizing committee business, please.

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): So moved, Mr. Clerk. Agreed? Thank you. We’ll hear the motion and begin, and then we can talk about debate.

Can you move the motion, please?

MPP Monica Ciriello: I move the motion.

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Okay. Thank you.

Is there any debate, please? Yes. MPP Wong-Tam.

MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam: Yes, thank you, sir. Chair, I understand that we’re largely just going to set up the working calendar for the committee. I don’t see any reason why business like that should go into camera. We’re not discussing anything confidential. It’s literally organizing the calendar, the working calendar, for this committee.

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): All right, thank you for that. Further debate?

Is there a consensus that—MPP Fife, please go ahead.

Ms. Catherine Fife: I just meant to say I share the sentiments of my colleague. This is a public place. We’re doing public business. It should be publicly available, as should the conversation or the debate that we’re going to have around the work that we’re doing.

This is a new practice for this government, which I guess we shouldn’t be surprised at, at this stage in the game. However, there’s no need for us to move into camera. People should know why we’re doing the work that we’re doing, so I’ll be asking for a recorded vote on this.

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): Okay. Thank you very much. Further debate?

On the motion to go into camera, we have a recorded vote.

Ayes

Allsopp, Ciriello, Darouze, Sarrazin, Vickers.

Nays

Collard, Fife, Wong-Tam.

The Chair (Mr. Lorne Coe): The motion is carried. We’re moving into camera, please. Thank you. Staff can move.

The committee continued in closed session at 0903.
