An Act respecting Maimonides Schools for Jewish Studies

Preamble

Maimonides Schools for Jewish Studies has applied for special legislation changing its powers and the method of appointing its President.

It is appropriate to grant the application.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1. Section 2 of The Maimonides Schools for Jewish Studies Act, 1968-69 is repealed and the following substituted:

Powers

2. Maimonides Schools may,

(a) establish and maintain a faculty, institutes, departments, chairs and offer programs or courses in areas that it deems appropriate;

(b) grant undergraduate, graduate and honourary degrees that are specific in their designation to areas of higher Jewish learning;

(c) affiliate with, take into affiliation or federate with other colleges, schools, universities or institutions of learning throughout the world on the terms or for the periods of time that the Board of Governors determines;

(d) publish or distribute periodicals or books related to studies or research in areas of Jewish learning;

(e) establish fellowships for students engaged in studies or research in areas of Jewish learning;

(f) establish ancillary colleges operating under the control of the Board of Governors; or

(g) establish and collect fees or charges for tuition or services of any kind offered by Maimonides Schools.

2. Section 7 of the Act is repealed and the following substituted:

President

7. (1) The first President of Maimonides Schools shall be Rabbi Yaakov S. Weinberg.

Successors

(2) Subsequent Presidents shall be appointed by,

(a) the Board of Governors and the Senate of Maimonides Schools from a panel of candidates recommended by an international board of educators in higher Jewish learning, which board shall be appointed by the Senate, in the case of a President appointed for a term starting before January 1, 1998;

(b) the Board of Governors, with the advice of the Senate, from a panel of candidates recommended by an international board of educators in higher Jewish learning, which board shall be appointed by the Board of Governors, in the case of a President appointed for a term starting on or after January 1, 1998.

Duties

(3) The President shall be responsible, with the advice of the Senate of Maimonides Schools, for,

(a) supervising, directing and regulating the system of education of Maimonides Schools;

(b) determining the course of study and standards of admission and qualifications for degrees;

(c) conferring degrees; and

(d) appointing and removing members of the faculty and the officers and employees of Maimonides Schools.

Commencement

3. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

4. The short title of this Act is the Maimonides Schools for Jewish Studies Act, 1998.
