Ontario is Canada’s second-largest province, covering more than one million square kilometres. It is also the province with the largest population – one in three Canadians lives here. Ontario’s population reached 14,490,207 on April 1, 2019.
Most Ontarians live in urban centres, mainly near the western shores of Lake Ontario. Over 6 million people live in the Greater Toronto area, close to half of Ontario’s population.
The vast space of northern Ontario is much less densely populated. Today over half the people in northern Ontario live in the five biggest northern cities of Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, and Timmins.
