Question Period Program

This 60-minute program, offered only when the Legislature is in session, gives students an opportunity to experience Parliament in action! Students will observe a parliamentary session during Question Period and participate in an interactive discussion.

What is Question Period or Oral Questions?

Question Period is a specific time allotted every morning in the daily schedule of the meetings of the Legislature. It is an opportunity for MPPs to ask the Premier and Cabinet Ministers questions about government policy and current issues.

During the interactive discussion, we will review what the students observed in the Legislature, and they will be asked to consider:

  • Who was asking questions and how did the Cabinet Ministers respond?
  • How were the questions asked by government MPPs different from those asked by opposition MPPs?
  • Why is it important to schedule time for Question Period?
  • What is the role of the media?

To prepare:

  • Watch Question Period online at or on television if available (check local cable listings).
  • Discuss current issues facing the Ontario government – collect newspaper clippings or read online news reports. Can you predict which topics might come up during Question Period?
