FAQs about the Outreach Program

What is the Community Outreach Program?

The Community Outreach Program is a free program offered by the Parliamentary Protocol and Public Relations branch of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. It is designed to bring educational programming about Ontario’s Parliament into the communities throughout the province. Our experienced educators visit schools across the province, and lead a two hour customized program about the function of parliament, the key players and their responsibilities, the levels of government and the importance of youth engagement and civics.

Who can apply for the Community Outreach Program?

Ontario elementary and secondary schools, grades 4-12. The program supports the Ontario school curriculum and is designed to enhance the material already introduced by the teacher.

When can you come to my community?

We visit groups in the Greater Toronto Area and within a 2-hour drive (150 kms) of downtown Toronto regularly throughout the year. If you are farther away from the GTA please refer to our Community Outreach Schedule to see when we will be in your area. Once we receive your request online, we will contact you to coordinate an outreach program in your community.

How do I request a Community Outreach Program?

Submit an online request form. You can also call us at 416-325-0061 or email ppproutreach@ola.org for more information.

Can I submit more than one request?

Only one request per school can be submitted, however we may be able to accommodate up to 2 separate programs at your school. Additional programs to other schools in the surrounding area of your community will also be considered during the same visit.

I live in another province. Can I apply?

No, only Ontario residents are eligible for this program.

What is the maximum number of students that can participate per program?

The maximum group size is 50 students at one time.

Can a student or individual apply on behalf of their class?

No, requests must be submitted by the teacher or school administrator.

How long is the program?

While each program is tailored to the audience and program duration may vary, the program typically lasts approximately two hours.

What is the focus of the program?

Each program focuses on civics, the function of parliament and government, levels of government, key roles in parliament including an interactive debate or activity. All our programs are interactive, with an engaging presentation and a participatory activity. Each program is customized and we work closely with the teacher to provide the best program for their students.

Do my students need to have some knowledge about parliament in order to request a program?

The program is designed to enhance curriculum material introduced by the teacher. In our experience, students who have been introduced to some material benefit most from the interactive activities and are more engaged in the program. We will work closely with the teacher in advance so we can prepare the best program for your students. Additional information and teaching tools are available on our website

Can I combine two classes or grades from my school?

Yes, if the group is learning at a similar grade level. We will work with the teachers to best tailor the program to the group to ensure a positive experience.

Is there a cost to the program?

No, the program is free.

How quickly will you respond to my request?

We will contact you via email or telephone within 2-3 business days.
