FAQ - Virtual Outreach
What is the Virtual Outreach Program?
The Virtual Outreach program is a new education program offered by the Parliamentary Protocol and Public Relations branch of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to engage youth in the parliamentary process and promote active citizenship. This new program is designed to bring educational programming about Ontario's Parliament to classrooms that are either too far or unable to visit the Legislative Assembly in person.
Who can apply for the Virtual Outreach Program?
As the program is in a pilot phase we are currently only accepting bookings for Grade 5 or Grade 5 split classes. If you are interested in our educational programs, please consult our Outreach Program, which visits communities across the province. Additional virtual programs for elementary and secondary students will be available in the coming months.
When can I book a program?
Our Virtual Outreach Program will be available throughout the year, please note, due to the technical requirements of the program, we must receive your request at least 4 weeks in advance.
How do I request a Virtual Outreach Program?
Please submit an online request form. You can also call us at 416-325-7500 or send an email to PPPROutreach@ola.org for more information.
Can I submit more than one request?
Only one request per teacher can be submitted per academic school year.
What is the maximum number of students that can participate per program?
The maximum group size is 35 students at one time.
I live in another province. Can I apply?
No, only Ontario residents are eligible for this program.
How long is the program?
The program will be approximately 45 minutes in duration. The program may exceed this time depending on student participation.
What is the focus of the program?
The theme of the program is Introduction to Parliament. This program introduces students to the three levels of government, how parliament works, and explains the key roles in the parliamentary system. We will work with the teacher to customize each program to ensure the most suitable program for students.
Do my students need to have some knowledge about parliament in order to request a program?
The program is designed to enhance curriculum material introduced by the teacher. In our experience, students who have been introduced to some material in advance benefit most and are more engaged in the program. Additional information and teaching tools are available on our website.
Can I combine two classes or grades from my school?
Yes, if the group is learning at a similar grade level and the group does not exceed 35 students we are happy to run the program for multiple classrooms.
Is there a cost to the program?
No, the program is free.
What are the technical requirements for the program?
You will require a computer that is connected to the internet, a webcam, a microphone, sound and either a projector screen of a smart board. A wired internet connection is recommended for video quality.
You will also be required to download a free video conferencing software called Zoom. An account is not required to participate in the call but you will need to download the software in advance. You will be sent a URL link to join your video call.
